Superfluidity in helium-4 was discovered by the Russian physicist Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa in the mid-1930s, and the same phenomenon in helium-3 was first observed by Douglas D. This liquid spreads in a thin film over the surface of any substance it touches, and this film flows without friction even against the force of gravity.īy contrast, the less plentiful helium-3 forms three distinguishable liquid phases of which two are superfluids. Helium II exhibits the property called superfluidity: its viscosity, or resistance to flow, is so low that it has not been measured. This liquid form is called helium II to distinguish it from normal liquid helium I. The normal liquid form is called helium I and exists at temperatures from Helium I's boiling point of 4.21 K (−268.9 ☌) down to about 2.18 K (−271 ☌).īelow 2.18 K, thermal conductivity of helium-4 becomes more than 1,000 times greater than that of copper. Helium-4 is unique in having two liquid forms. Helium was detected in the sun by its spectral lines many years before it was found on Earth.Ī colourless, odourless gas that is totally unreactive.īelow Helium's boiling point of 4.22 K (−268.93 ☌ −452.07 ☏) and above the lambda point of 2.1768 K (−270.9732 ☌ −455.7518 ☏), the isotope helium-4 exists in a normal colorless liquid state, called helium I. Helium gets Helium's name from ‘helios’, the Greek word for the sun. However, some studies suggest that helium produced deep in the earth by radioactive decay can collect in natural gas reserves in larger than expected quantities, in some cases, having been released by volcanic activity. Helium's supply is thought to be rapidly diminishing. Terrestrial helium is a non-renewable resource because once released into the atmosphere, Helium promptly escapes into space. This radiogenic helium is trapped with natural gas in concentrations as great as 7% by volume, from which Helium is extracted commercially by a low-temperature separation process called fractional distillation. Most terrestrial helium present today is created by the natural radioactive decay of heavy radioactive elements (thorium and uranium, although there are other examples), as the alpha particles emitted by such decays consist of helium-4 nuclei. On Earth, Helium is relatively rare-5.2 ppm by volume in the atmosphere. In 1903, large reserves of helium were found in natural gas fields in parts of the United States, by far the largest supplier of the gas today. The formal discovery of the element was made in 1895 by chemists Sir William Ramsay, Per Teodor Cleve, and Nils Abraham Langlet, who found helium emanating from the uranium ore, cleveite, which is now not regarded as a separate mineral species, but as a variety of uraninite. Lockyer was the first to propose that the line was due to a new element, which he named. Janssen recorded the helium spectral line during the solar eclipse of 1868, while Lockyer observed Helium from Britain. Janssen is often jointly credited with detecting the element, along with Norman Lockyer. Pogson, and Lieutenant John Herschel, and was subsequently confirmed by French astronomer Jules Janssen. Helium was first detected as an unknown, yellow spectral line signature in sunlight during a solar eclipse in 1868 by Georges Rayet, Captain C. Large amounts of new helium are created by nuclear fusion of hydrogen in stars. Most helium in the universe is helium-4, the vast majority of which was formed during the Big Bang. This helium-4 binding energy also accounts for why Helium is a product of both nuclear fusion and radioactive decay. Helium's abundance is similar to this in both the Sun and in Jupiter, due to the very high nuclear binding energy (per nucleon) of helium-4, with respect to the next three elements after helium. Helium is present at about 24% of the total elemental mass, which is more than 12 times the mass of all the heavier elements combined. Helium is the second lightest and second most abundant element in the observable universe (hydrogen is the lightest and most abundant). Helium's boiling and melting point are the lowest among all the elements. Helium is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, inert, monatomic gas and the first in the noble gas group in the periodic table. Helium (from Greek: ἥλιος, romanized: helios, lit. 'sun') is a chemical element with the symbol He and atomic number 2.

The Kursk, even when belonging to an older class of submarines, could be compared to Akula-II class submarines. The Kursk, was the youngest boat of her class, being laid down on 22nd March 1992, and put to commission on 30th December 1996. The Kursk (pennant number K-141), was a Project 949A “Antey” (NATO reporting name “Oscar II” class) nuclear powered, cruise missile carrying submarine. The exercise was the first ever to be conducted in over a decade. The exercise was to witness a grand manoeuvre, comprising 30 warships and 3 submarines, which also included the Kursk. The newly appointed Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, announced a 3 day military exercise, named “Summer-X”, to be held from 10th to 13th August. The Russian armed forces had to be brought to its prime. The force as a whole, witnessed sharp decline in funding, resulting in a huge portion of the once Soviet navy, either being passed on to its successor states or lay rotting at various ports across Russia. The once strong Soviet Navy, fell to the pangs of disintegration of the Soviet Union. To understand the story, one needs to go back to 1991. The shocking disappearance of this submarine was kept hidden from the public eyes and ears for almost 2 days, until the Northern Fleet confirmed the loss. May their souls rest in peaceĢ0 years ago, on this very fateful day, the pride of the Northern Fleet, the once assumed “unsinkable” Kursk submarine of the Russian Navy, went down around 350ft under the Barents sea. About 20 ships were taking part in the operation. This article pays homage to the 118 sailors, who perished aboard the Russian submarine K-141 Kursk, exactly 20 years ago. The navy was determined to continue the rescue effort, but the weather in the Barents Sea was deteriorating with high winds and waves buffeting rescue ships. The rescue work was very dangerous, he said. "Sand and silt envelop the capsule causing zero visibility," said a navy officer, who did not wish to be named.Ī rescue capsule was almost lost during the operation because of the strong currents and bad weather, said navy spokesman Igor Dygalo. As Russia's own rescue operation continued, conditions on the sea floor were very bad with rescuers able to see just a few inches through the muddy water even though they had searchlights. President Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying the submarine's situation was "critical" and that everything was being done to try to reach the Kursk. Russian navy commander Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov said today that Moscow would make use of British help. in readiness to attend the submarine which has sunk in 350ft of water in the Barents Sea. After watching the ending, I was left with some unanswered questions regarding some of the details here. Now that I've mentioned the good, let's talk about why I couldn't give this aspect a perfect 10. I never know what I'm going to see when watching something like this. For me, that's one of the best aspects of this story is those little plot twists. I was left gasping like fish more than once here. You'll also need to be paying close attention to all the plot twists! These little suckers come out of NOWHERE and twist the story into a completely different direction that one would expect. This is a thinking anime that touches on a ton of dark and deep issues. I wouldn't recommend this show if you're just looking for some simple anime that would kill an afternoon. I'll definitely have to do some re-watching to get all the little nuances and plot points down. There's just so much depth, and it's so cerebral. The story of this show is something else. I'm sad to see it end 'cause I want more of this world, but, on the other hand, I'm glad it's got a definitive ending and isn't really leaving us cliff-hanging. those there, though, this anime is one of the best things I've seen in a while, even better than Hikaru no Go which had be so wrapped up spring break. This would be my first review to be an absolute 10 in score if there weren't just a few unanswered questions and assumed understanding after everything was said and done. It's got beautiful and THICK plot, hidden meanings, a GORGEOUS musical score, wonderful and zany characters, and enough emotional hitting power to make me keep a tissue box handy for those sad and happy tears. Holy flippin' A!!! Where to even begin with this anime?! There is so much here that I look for in an anime I even added it to my favorites list before I was even done watching. One such maintainer is the Duralast DL-2D. Many maintainers have multiple circuits, so you can maintain multiple batteries at once (think of boats that may contain 2-3 batteries), or, buy a maintainer for every piece of equipment you have that uses a battery. Maintainers are growing in popularity as customers realize that replacing a $100.00 battery every year, or 2 years on multiple pieces of equipment is far worse than buying a $30-50.00 maintainer to keep all your batteries in top shape when not being used. This way, when you want to hook the maintainer up, you simply plug the connector in, plug the maintainer in to the wall, and you are ready to go. You can use standard “alligator” clamps like all chargers use, or you can go with a permanent solution that allows you to wire a pigtail connector right into your battery cables. Maintainers are generally the size of the palm of your hand, and provide 2 types of ways to connect to a battery. Because of this, battery maintainers are a fantastic item to solve this problem.Ī battery maintainer is essentially a very small version of a battery charger that serves one purpose – supply a very low-amperage trickle charge to the battery only when it needs it, and in that sense, keep it “maintained” at the proper voltage at all times. Many times, items that suffer from this are lawn and power sports equipment, or vehicles that are rarely driven or stored for the winter – anything that goes a long time in between use. A battery can only take so many of these before it simply loses its ability to take and maintain a charge. One of the big killers of batteries is a series of constant discharges / recharges. It’s important to note that this feature is different than that of a separate Battery Booster (discussed below), which supplies a much higher amperage boost and can start a car with a completely dead battery. This supplied boost generally only lasts 30-60 seconds before the charger shuts off the current. Every battery, based on it’s use and age, responds differently to charging, but most people use a standard charge because they need use out of the battery as soon as possible.īoost or Engine Starting: The Engine Starting Feature of a battery charger is designed to supply a strong current of 75-100 amps to help start a vehicle if the battery is charged enough to turn the engine over, but not enough to turn it with the speed needed to start the engine. Standard Charge: A standard charge allows you to charge a battery – in most cases – in 3-5 hours, sometimes sooner. Trickle charging is what is also used in Battery Maintainers, which we will talk about their use and importance later. It does so by providing a very low amperage. It’s very slow, steady, and often takes 1-2 days to properly charge the battery. Low Amp/Trickle Charge: A trickle charge often is the most effective way of charging a battery. Let’s go through what each of these various charging cycles actually mean. Several other chargers also have a feature of a “maintain charge”. Most chargers on the market provide 3 charging functions – a low amp, or trickle charge (which is generally 1 to 2 amps), a standard charge (generally 6 to 10 amps), and an engine starter, which is essentially a boost of 75 to 100 amps. When shopping for a battery charger, it’s important to understand several of the other functions that chargers can provide. An example of a charger using these features is the Duralast DL-75D, available in AutoZone stores. On top of that, they let you know once the charge is complete, taking away the guesswork of the old days. Today, battery chargers all use digital technology to sense charge, detect problems with bad batteries, reversed cables, and provide a safe, effective charge to the battery. Battery chargers have come a long way from the old days of hooking up the clamps, plugging it in, and attempting to look at an old, analog gauge to understand whether or not the battery is charged. |
